I’ll admit, I’m not a huge beauty product consumer. When it comes to my skin and makeup routine, I veer toward simplicity, often staying with the tried-and-true products that have, thus far, never let me down. But there is one type of product I’ve spent countless hours, dollars, and amounts of energy researching and sampling, and that is lip products. I’m always up for experimenting with new colors and formulas to add to my lip product stash, so when I discovered Wonderskin Wonder Blading Peel and Reveal Lip Stain Kit, I was immediately intrigued.

The kit is a social media star, amassing more than 52 million views for videos featuring its lip stain, and gained notoriety due to its amusing application process. Celebrity makeup artist Carola Gonzalez, who has worked with Kerry Washington and Hailey Bieber, is also a fan. Opening the box — which included a lip masque, lip activator mist, and cloth to catch any drippings from the spray, felt like unpacking a chemistry set as a kid. Unlike typical lip stains, glosses, and lipsticks, which let you see the color as you apply, the first step of Wonderskin’s Lip Stain involves using the masque as you would a gloss, which swipes on as an iridescent bluish-purple that resembles a Snapchat filter.

I was worried about applying it evenly, but discovered that the color blends well post-peel. The great part about applying the masque is that the intensity of the stain can easily be customized by leaving it on anywhere from 10 to 45 seconds (more time equals a darker stain). The final step is to spritz the activator mist that hardens the masque so it peels off easily. As a side note, be sure to keep your mouth closed while spraying, as the mist has an unpleasant taste.

As soon as I “peeled and revealed” the stain left on my lips, which was a quick and satisfying process, I was pleasantly surprised. The 20-second setting I used in my first try resulted in an ideal pigment — noticeable, but not too dark. What’s especially great about this formula is that you can achieve your desired color through trial and error. Leave the product on for 10 seconds for a daytime look, or closer to 45 seconds for a bolder lip, ideal for a night out. It caused a slight tingle that dissipated after I swiped on a basic balm. Plus, I didn’t have to worry about any sensitivities due to the products’ vegan ingredients including moisturizing squalane and purified seaweed in the masque, and sugar complex in the activator.

I originally applied the product before dinner and drinks and was amazed at its lasting power. The color stayed through my meal and beyond — Wonderskin claims 10 hours — while I sporadically used a touch of clear hydrating balm on top to add moisture and shine. You can also apply Wonderskin Wonder Blading Supreme Shine Lip Gloss for an ultra-glossy effect. The stain is waterproof and transfer-proof, so you don’t need to worry about it wiping off on a napkin or leaving marks on your teeth. Unlike other lip stains I’ve tried that faded more quickly, the chemistry involved in the application seems to make the product last.

Not only can you customize the intensity of the stain, but Wonderskin Peel and Reveal is also available in three fresh tints — light pink, light rose, and peachy rose — for subtle color and less commitment, and 10 full colors from Romance (cool rose) to Lovely (chestnut brown) so you can find one that best suits you. And don’t forget your camera when you apply this Reels-worthy product.
