Breaking up is hard to do—and it's even harder when ex turns around and gets engaged seconds later to another girl. Another added level of difficulty? When the whole ordeal is making international headlines. Rough.

If you’re dealing with a similar situation (sans media attention), there’s much inspiration to be drawn from two women currently in the thick of it: Cazzie David and Selena Gomez.

David dated SNL actor Pete Davidson for around two years, their relationship ending just months ahead of Davidson’s engagement to singer Ariana Grande.

There’s a bit more distance in Gomez’s case. She and fellow child star Justin Bieber dated on-and-off for years, the most recent instance beginning late last year and ending at some point around March 2018. About four months later, Bieber announced his engagement to another woman from his past, Hailey Baldwin (whom he’d begun dating again just weeks prior).

So, how are these ladies handling the media (and personal) heat? Follow along below for our Cazzie and Selena-inspired (and very unofficial) guide to surviving your ex’s sudden engagement.

Affect Cool Indifference

Selena and Cazzie are so unconcerned with their ex’s engagements that they can’t even be bothered to spitefully delete all past social media mentions of them. David’s Instagram is filled with photos of her and Davidson during their relationship, and Gomez still has a sly Bieber birthday post up from March. Note: she also still has photos of ex The Weeknd on her ‘gram.

Send a Subtle Sartorial Message (and Change Your Hair, Too)

Not only did Sel go the breakover route with some sleek hair extensions, but she cleverly commented on the whole sitch through the power of fashun. Look close, her pocket reads, “Only the Strong Survive.” Like Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle, Gomez is a bona fide survivor.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Sel’s been hitting the press circuit hard this week to promote animated film Hotel Transylvania 3. Like a true pro, she’s been her upbeat self throughout it all, even fielding completely unrelated questions about Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s quick engagement.

And there you have it. Best of luck.
