Freida Pinto shot to fame after 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire, but taking that part wasn’t the biggest risk of her career. In fact, it was the parts that she didn’t take that defined her as an actress.

For InStyle’s May Issue, Pinto describes how voluntarily taking time away from the spotlight actually benefit her in the long run. “Staying silent work-wise for about two and a half years instead of taking every project that was going to objectify me or put me further into the box that I was already being put into was a big risk that I had to take, and it was a very frustrating risk,” she explains in the video at top.

“It was years of anxiety, but it has paid off because it has made me realize that you only do what you’re passionate about, and things that really drive you, because everything else you will not put 100 percent into it.”
