What do you think Dita Von Teese smells like? Something sultry? Something sweet?

The star has teamed up with Heretic Parfum to introduce Scandalwood, a sexy new fragrance and eau de parfum that also comes as a candle and is being dubbed the “world’s first striptease candle.” Sound interesting? We thought so, too, and caught up with Von Teese at the shoot for her video launch.

Poised in a strapless, body-hugging black dress, Von Teese strutted inside an ornate room within Paramour Mansion in Los Angeles in black Christian Louboutin pumps, with her hair perfectly coiffed into a retro bob and her lips slathered in deep red Mac Ruby Woo lipstick ($18;

“I think we were just going for this kind of classic me,” Von Teese said about her look, as she sat next to Heretic Parfum founder Douglas Little. “Every time I come here, I’m just like, 'This is just like the same aesthetic that my house is, but it’s just far grander.' So it felt like the right place to shoot because it does feel like my home. I just live in the mini version of this.”

While this is their first official collaboration in the 16 years Von Teese and Little have known each other, the entertainer bounced ideas off of him in the past when she launched a fragrance. “I created a few different perfumes, and the one that became my personal favorite, was my signature scent the whole time—Erotique. It was a fragrance that I did with a brand in Europe,” she said. “They let me do whatever I wanted with this fragrance. There were no rules, and I created this fragrance that became a cult favorite. Not just for me, but for my fans.”

In creating Scandalwood, Von Teese wanted something “even more glamorous,” something that “smells like sensuality.”

“The sandalwood chord makes the fragrance wonderfully androgynous, which I think is a fascinating take on Erotique. Erotique has a velvety quality to it, but this one merges into this kind of smolder-y, woodsy world. It’s similar, but it stands on its own,” Von Teese noted.

The same goes for the candle, which has a unique striptease aspect, as the name suggests. There is an image of Von Teese, wearing a black dress and gloves on the candle, and when it is lit, the gloves and dress disappear.

“I’m a big collector of antiques and vintage things, and I’ve always loved those glasses that you can pour a drink in, and when the drink is cold, the clothes fall off the frame,” she said. “So, we both loved this idea, and we were trying to figure out how we could make a candle out of it. It’s pretty racy, but it’s not any more racy than those glasses in the 50s and 60s were.”

The fragrance is unisex, and whether a man or woman wears it, Von Teese hopes they will feel “powerful, seductive, glamorous, and unique” when they do. “I think we’re all looking to make our own imprint on the world,” she continued. “I have always been fascinated by people that kind of are brave enough to wear different clothes, wear their hair and makeup in a different way, and smell different. I just want people to kind of feel like I do. I always used the tools of glamour to make myself feel more confident.”
