On the hit TV show This is Us, Milo Ventimiglia’s facial hair is basically its own character. Ventimiglia’s character, Jack Pearson, has a mustache that’s so significant, it indicates the time frame. So during filming of the show, Ventimiglia has no choice but to groom his mustache as if his job depends on it — because his job literally depends on it.
Shooting for Season 2 of the show is rapidly approaching, so the actor is on a strict facial hair regimen.
And by strict, we mean super casual.
In an interview with GQ, the actor explains how he maintains his very specific ’70s facial hair look. He says that mustaches and beards are all about patience.
"There are no magic tricks to making your beard grow faster," Ventimiglia told GQ. "It's just patience. I think hair grows, um, a millimeter every month, or half-inch every six months, or a quarter kilometer every year. I'm really not sure, I think the best thing to do is wash your face and use lotion and just pray that it grows in right."
As for what products he uses to maintain his luxurious facial hair, Ventimiglia admitted, “I’m a very simple guy: soap and lotion. There’s really not a whole lot to it.”
Milo doesn’t seem to mind sporting a mustache for the show, but’s he’s not super into the idea of the ‘stache making a comeback in 2017.
“I got paid to wear one,” Ventimiglia said. “So I didn’t personally decide ‘Hey I’m gonna wear a mustache’. It was more like ‘This is what you’re doing for work, kid’. So I wore the mustache. But usually when I’m not working I just let my beard grow in and let my hair grow out. And see what job is next.”
We can’t wait to see the return of Milo Ventimiglia’s mustache this fall, Thursdays at 9:00 p.m.
