How could we resist this?
Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again has officially debuted its first trailer, promising more ABBA, more sun-soaked Mediterranean vistas, and more Colin Firth in spandex (we hope) when the movie hits theaters next summer.
The sequel will update us on the lives of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), boyfriend Sky (Dominic Cooper), possible father Sam (Pierce Brosnan), and more in the present day, while also dipping into the past to tell us the story of Donna (Lily James, playing the younger incarnation of Meryl Streep’s role) and how she came to run an inn on a small Greek island (as well as her romance with three young hunks) while “having the time of her life.” Also on tap—a taste of Donna and the Dynamos, the musical trio of dancing queens that slay disco hits, in their prime. The new footage also gives a glimpse of Cher, who plays Sophie’s grandmother.
“As soon as you see Lily on screen, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Donna! I’m seeing Donna when she was wild and young and free, and she has the essence that Meryl brought to it,’” Seyfried previously told EW. “And it’s kind of extraordinary.”
A teaser poster for the film, showcasing Donna’s iconic overalls (that’s right, we said iconic), hit the web on Wednesday in advance of the trailer.
For those worried this sequel just might be their Waterloo, Seyfried gleefully told EW, “The movie’s better than the original because there’s a depth to it that only comes from time.”
Watch the trailer above and wonder “Does it show again? Just how much we missed you?”
Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again hits theaters July 20, 2018.
