Freddie Prinze Jr. Got Choked Up Remembering She's All That Co-Star Paul Walker
Yesterday we remembered Paul Walker on what would have been his 44th birthday. The actor was involved in a fatal car crash in 2013, and fans and former co-stars still find it hard to believe that he’s gone. Walker’s 1999 She’s All That costar, Freddie Prinze Jr., got choked up talking about Walker to Us Magazine recently, recalling when he first met Walker during the film’s audition process.
"When Paul came into audition, I didn’t have cast approval, but I had what they called consultation. I knew Paul was the right guy, and when he finished the audition, I asked if I could excuse myself to go to the bathroom," Prinze Jr. said in the interview.
Prinze Jr. continued, "I ran outside where his car was parked. I said, 'Hey man, you’re gonna get this job.' They didn’t pay us anything. It was a small movie. [I said], 'They’re gonna offer you $25,000, they have $75 in the budget. Don’t say no.'" Prinze Jr. then cleared his throat, apologizing for getting choked up. "He was a good dude ... I don't like talking about him, probably because I get choked up."
And as history revealed, Walker didn’t say no and was cast as Dean Sampson, the jock who challenged his friend Zack Siler, played by Prinze Jr., to turn a nobody into the prom queen. "I heard, years later, after he passed away, that he had told his brother and his mom that story," Prinze Jr. continued. "To hear that, that meant a lot to him to share that. I loved that there was still that connection there. As an actor, you don’t want guys to suffer if they don’t have to. Right? You’re like, 'Dude—you got the part!' He was a good dude."
We’re so glad Prinze Jr. told Walker to take the part. Can you even imagine what She’s All That would look like if Walker wasn’t in it? We shiver at the thought, and are grateful for all Walker gave us in movie magic.
