Our Favorite Naomi Watts Roles Over the Years
Naomi Watts has made a name for herself since she began acting back in 1986. The actress has been nominated for two Oscars and has starred on both TV and the big screen throughout her impressive career. Watts' latest role is one we are pretty excited about. Now she's playing therapist Jean Holloway in Netflix's new series, Gypsy (watch the trailer here). The psychological thriller follows Holloway as she blurs the line of professionalism when she starts developing inappropriate relationships with her patients and the people in their lives.
In honor of the show's release, we decided to take a look back at Watts' best roles throughout the years, starting with one of her most memorable, The Ring (how she sleeps at night after that, we'll never know). She's been in countless other thrillers and dramas, and even a couple of comedies, so take a peek below at our favorites. All 10 episodes of Gypsy are available on Netflix.
THE RING, 2002
For most of us, The Ring is the first Naomi Watts film we remember—it was so scary, who could forget? She went on to also star in the sequel, The Ring Two, which came out in 2005. Anyone else still freak out whenever they see a static TV screen?
I HEART HUCKABEES, 2004
FUNNY GAMES, 2007
This psychological thriller is a remake of an Austrian film of the same name, and it will haunt your dreams. A couple, played by Watts and Tim Roth, along with their son and dog, are terrorized at their lake house by two men, who force the family to take part in a number of sadistic games in order to survive.
THE IMPOSSIBLE, 2012
This film earned Naomi Watts her second Academy Award nomination, and rightly so. Starring Watts and Ewan McGregor, The Impossible is based on a true story surrounding the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that killed nearly 230,000 people. The film follows a family vacationing in Thailand who is separated and gravely injured in the tsunami, and their journey to find each other in the aftermath.
You may also know this film by its other names, Two Mothers, Adoration, or Perfect Mothers. Naomi Watts and Robin Wright star as two best friends and mothers who live an idyllic life by the sea in Australia. Long story short, both mothers end up falling in love with each other's 18-year-old sons, and from there the story gets weirder and weirder.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), 2014
ST. VINCENT, 2014
Naomi Watts' role in this film earned her an Outstanding Supporting Actress nomination for a SAG Award. She plays a pregnant Russian prostitute, and to prepare for her role, she "found this little Russian spa in the West Village and went there and got manicures and taped these women." Talk about really getting into character. St. Vincent also starred Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.
THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT, 2015
If you've never seen or read the Divergent series, then this may not make a whole lot of sense to you. Watts starred in the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, as Four's (Theo James) mother, as well as the leader of the factionless. She was also in the third movie, Allegiant. Watts ditched her signature blonde hair for brunette in this role.
TWIN PEAKS, 2017
If you were a fan of the original Twin Peaks, which debuted in 1990, then you've probably seen the limited series remake that just premiered in May. Watts was not a part of the original cast, but she joined the reboot for four episodes.
