Forget Game of Thrones, This is Summer's Best Dragon Book

When I was pregnant with my daughter Riley four years ago, I became obsessed with building the perfect library for her, filled with Doctor Seuss, Mercer Mayer, Roald Dahl, Peggy Parish, Shel Silverstein, and Beverly Cleary. Along the way I discovered the many amazing authors that had popped up since my own childhood... like Sandra Boynton, Andrea Beaty, and Emily Winfield Martin.

And then I came across a book that I knew our home library—nay any home library—definitely needed: Dragons Love Tacos. If you have children under six, there's a good chance you're familiar with the 2012 story of a little boy named Robbie who throws a taco party for dragons, not realizing he has mistakenly served spicy salsa instead of mild salsa. (Spicy salsa gives taco-loving dragons, it turns out, fiery indigestion.) The book, written by Adam Rubin with illustrations by Daniel Salmieri, was an instant hit in my house and has led to Riley asking, before eating any piece of food, "is it spicy?" It was also a hit internationally—it's sold over 1 million copies and has spent over 150 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.

Ready for the exciting news? Today, the follow-up, appropriately named Dragos Love Tacos 2: The Sequel is released. It opens with a crisis: there's a taco shortage and all the dragons are freaking out. But Robbie has a time machine and he travels into the past, with a few dragon co-pilots, to a time when tacos were plentiful.

The verdict on the new book? Riley sat wide-eyed during our first read and then, once we got to the end, asked if we could immediately read it again. And then again. And then again. And that night she slept with the book under her pillow. (Four-year-olds are cute, aren't they?)

One warning, though. Both books will lead to cravings for tacos, nachos, and salsa (both spicy and mild) after reading. Plan accordingly.

Both Dragons Love Tacos and Dragons Love Tacos 2: The Sequel are available on Amazon and wherever children's books are sold.
