May has been called the merriest month, and this year, you’ll agree. You’ve come through two frustrating months—March and April—but snags you likely experienced then are rapidly resolving. Venus started to go retrograde on March 5 and went direct on April 15. Still, you needed to be patient when it came to matters of love and relationships. When any planet turns direct, that planet needs time to become strong and properly oriented on its orbital path. Venus will need to rub the tiny bits of sand out of her eyes and enjoy her tea and biscuits as she awakens.

How do astrologers know when a planet has not returned back to strong speed? We can see the planet’s speed on a special table called an ephemeris that NASA and others publish to track each of the planets’ courses. For example, Venus typically moves at a degree a day, but when retrograde, she takes twice that time, two days, to go the same distance, one degree. When she is in the process of turning direct, as Venus was during last month on April 15, it will take Venus eleven days to go one degree. This is why any retrograde planet exerts its most frustrating vibrations at the start and end dates of the retrograde—it takes a lot of energy to change direction. Here is a good image: imagine a cruise ship that attempts to make a U turn at sea. It will need all its inner power to change direction. The same is true of a planet.

Venus, the planet of good looks, love and affection, will reach full power by May 18, but with each passing day, Venus will be in better shape. I’m splitting hairs—Venus will be acting in quite a gracious way in May. If you hope to get engaged or to do anything radical to your looks, such as to cut your hair short, change it from blonde to brunette, or have plastic surgery, choose a day after May 18.

You will get good news about Mercury too in May, Mercury is the planet of communication, negotiation, contracts, commerce (all buying and selling), perception, and thinking. Mercury was retrograde from April 9, and go direct this month on May 3. Mercury retrogrades three times a year, so the next time Mercury will retrograde it will be August 12 to September 5, and then the last time this year, December 3 to December 22 (no shopping for gifts in December! Oh no!)

More happy news about May: the new moon in Taurus that occurred on April 26 was filled with sweetness and light. Saturn was beautifully angled to this new moon, and so was Neptune, so you will be inspired to take action (Neptune) and your decisions and initiations will lead to long term stability (Saturn). You will feel the effects of that new moon of April 26 in the first seven days of May.

The full moon in Scorpio, May 10 will be mighty special too. That new moon will be ultra-friendly to Neptune and Pluto, making it quite romantic, sexy and will add a touch of mystery. You may be spontaneous at this time, for Mercury (travel, writing, speaking, thinking) will be conjoin surprise planet Uranus the day before on May 9, giving you lots of opportunities to do something fun and brilliant at the spur of the moment. It’s also a great time to brainstorm for ideas. Pluto will also support the Sun, giving you help from a VIP.

The new moon of May 25 in Gemini will spur us all to travel, to begin a writing or speaking assignment, to design a website, to start to design an app, an electronic gadget, or piece of software, or to join a new social media platform, or to do some wise comparative shopping. These type activities will be strong all month, thanks to Mars in Gemini the entire time, but this new moon will give a special extra bolt of electricity to get started doing one or more of those activities.

Venus and Mars are called the cosmic lovers, for when they are orbiting close, they spark the spark of love. In May, Venus will be in Aries, favoring fire and air signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. If you are not one of those signs, don’t be blue—all the earth and water signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) will have their glorious month in June, for Venus is set to enter Taurus on June 6 for a month’s stay, and sexy Mars will enter Cancer on June 4 to, to stay until July 20. Now that Venus is just about back to normal, and Mars is moving at top speed, everyone, of every sign, will have a good shot at a loving, affectionate summer.

There is one more cosmic event to cheer about in May. Saturn and Uranus are now in a remarkably friendly position—one that astrologers call a “trine” — the most harmonious aspect possible. Genius planet Uranus will coax you to be creative and innovative, and Saturn, the planet of longevity, will help you take our ideas and make them long lasting, possibly permanent.

Saturn and Uranus will work together all year, and when they gradually spin off in different directions at the end of 2017, they will not form a similar aspect together again until 2047. This month they will be in ideal mathematical sync on May 18, but they need not reach precise aspect to be helpful to you. Being that both are very moving planets (Uranus takes 84 years to circle the Sun, and Saturn takes 29 years to take the same journey) this means that all year these two wonder-planets will orbit in the right parts of the sky to create a rare and special year for you.
