People Are Bewildered By Kimberly Guilfoyle's RNC Speech
Donald Trump, Jr.'s girlfriend used her speaking slot to yell into the microphone.
The Republican National Convention kicked off on Monday night, a mostly virtual event that featured speakers like former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley as well as a pretaped segment in which Donald Trump spoke to frontline workers. However, much of the conversation on Twitter was dominated by Donald Trump, Jr.'s girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle, who used her allotted six-minute time slot at the convention to yell into the microphone at an empty auditorium.
During her speech, Guilfoyle spoke (yelled) about the Democrats' "socialist agenda" and hit out at her home state of California — which she called a "land of discarded needles in parks" — for scheduling blackouts amid mass wildfires.
"He built the greatest economy the world has ever known!" she exclaimed about Trump. "President Trump is the law and order president!"
The literal volume of Guilfoyle's speech set Twitter alight with confusion, bemusement, and plenty of memes.
Some also criticized the content of Guilfoyle's speech, during which she claimed to be a "first-generation American" immigrant, citing her mother, "a special education teacher from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico." However, Puerto Ricans are American citizens.
By early Tuesday morning, Saturday Night Live actress Cecily Strong was trending on Twitter, as people hoped Strong would soon parody Guilfoyle on the show.
The RNC is set to take place over the coming days. After the first night alone, CNN has decried it "a parade of dishonesty," writing that the four nights of the Democratic National Convention added together did not have the number of misleading and false claims made on the first night of the Republicans' convention.
