Zoe Kravitz Reveals How Her Rock Star Dad's Dating Life Affected Her Childhood
Though resident cool girl Zoe Kravitz seems to be aglow with confidence and BDE these days, she’ll be the first to admit that wasn’t always the case.
The 29-year-old recently told Elle that she “felt like a freak” at the (mostly white) private school she attended in Miami. “I felt like a freak because my hair was different, and little kids would come up and say, ‘Can I feel your hair?'” she said. “The things that made me different were the things I didn’t like about myself; I wanted to straighten my hair, remind people that I was half white.”
Being the daughter of a rock star (who happened to be one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, with girlfriends including Nicole Kidman) didn’t help matters, either.
“I went through a really awkward phase. I was short and brown, surrounded by tall girls with boobs and blonde hair,” she explained. “And my dad was dating supermodels, so I was waking up to Adriana Lima. I didn’t have beauty as a crutch, and I’m thankful for that because I had to develop my personality.”
On the eve of her 30th birthday, the Big Little Lies star appears to be feeling more secure. In a recent Rolling Stone interview (which she posed fully nude for), the actress revealed that she and boyfriend Karl Glusman have been engaged since February.
“He nailed it,” Zoe said of Glusman’s low-key proposal.“I love that it wasn’t this elaborate plan in Paris. It was at home, in sweatpants.”
