The 39 Most Naked Dresses of All Time

Naked dresses are perhaps the most impressive of all red carpet feats. While they may not always make the best-dressed list, they do require a certain breed of celebrity to pull off. Not only do you have to have the balls to risk a wardrobe malfunction, but you have to do it with enough confidence that you look fierce — not terrified — in the photographs. Take Naomi Campbell's appearance in Valentino's couture show during the spring/summer 2019 presentation. The legendary model gracefully strutted down the runway in a see-through gown with a ruffle skirt. (Click through the gallery for the NSFW photo).  Get the inside scoop on all your favorite celebrities with our FREE daily newsletter, InStyle Celebrity. Breaking news, relationship updates, hairstyle inspo, fashion trends, and more direct to your inbox! Let's not forget Rihanna’s infamous CFDA dress either. The girl rocked a completely sheer dress without a bra — and later remarked that her only regret was not wearing a bedazzled thong to match. That, my friends, is dedication. Then, there was the year 2015, when the Met Gala saw not one nor two but three naked dresses on the red carpet, all worn by Hollywood’s hottest A-listers. Jennifer Lopez, above, bared her famous curves in a custom Atelier Versace illusion gown. Beyoncé was nearly naked in Givenchy. And Kim Kardashian West almost looked modest in comparison in her sheer Roberto Cavalli dress, because no one’s getting naked without KKW joining in. Click through to see the best naked dresses of all time.

Will Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Attend the 2018 Met Gala?

The Met Gala is basically synonymous with "risk taking avant garde fashion" at this point. It's an excuse for celebrities to play dress up—according to theme—while promoting the Met's costume exhibit along the way. And what would a 2018 Met Gala be without its star staples like Rihanna, Madonna, and, of course, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

The duo has been making headlines lately for a body-bearing fragrance, their newborn baby girl Chicago, and Kanye's Twitter rants, but come May 7, eyes might turn to their fashion. The Wests have a history of showing up to the Met Gala while making a statement, and we have to wonder what this year will bring.

With a theme like "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" and Rihanna chairing the festivities, we can expect it to be an eyebrow-raising evening all around. While we don't know either way what Kim and Kanye's RSVP is for 2018, let's cross our fingers that they join in on the fun.

Until then, though, scroll through all the times the couple hit the red carpet at the Met Gala.

2013 Met Gala, Theme "Punk: Chaos to Couture"

2013 was a big year for the Wests. Kim was pregnant with their first child North, and she and Kanye made their first-ever Met Gala appearance side-by-side (Kanye had attended alone in previous years). And boy did they make it a moment.

Kim wore a patterned Givenchy gown in what some called a "couch print" of florals, and it was a divisive fashion choice. The dress had built-in gloves that covered her hands, and a slit that went all the way up her thigh.

It might be the first thing to come to mind with the theme "punk," but her dress designer Riccardo Tisci couldn't be happier with it.

"I said, we should give her our punk moment with a romantic beautiful flower-printed dress," he told WWD. "I have dressed many pregnant women in the past. People can say what they want. To me, pregnancy is the most beautiful thing in the world, and when you celebrate something, you give people flowers. I think she looked amazing. She was the most beautiful pregnant woman I dressed in my career.”

An event honoring a demure designer deserves an equally demure outfit. The star couple embraced the theme fully by leaving the nude illusion and patterned gloves at home.

"My dress was originally made of this amazing leather with metallic detailing, but we decided at the last minute to redo it in blue satin," Kim wrote on her website afterwards.

2015 Met Gala, Theme "China: Through the Looking Glass"

What's feathery and white and sheer all over? Kim's 2015 Met Gala outfit, that's what. While Kanye kept things rather simple in his all-black attire, Kim went the opposite route by managing to wear a long sleeve gown with a tumbling train, while also looking completely bare.

2016 Met Gala, Themed "Manus x Machina"

The 2016 theme was all about tech, so of course Kim and Kanye took inspiration from robots.

"I wanted a silver theme. I felt like everyone was going to go with that, but I still really wanted to do it. I thought Balmain was the perfect choice for me and Kanye, especially. I think Kanye's look is a little bit more downplayed with the denim mixed with all the Balmain bling," Kim told E! News. "I just wanted to really go for it and be a bling-y, sexy robot!"

2017 Met Gala, Themed "Commes des Garçons"

In 2017, Kanye West opted out of the Met Gala festivities, which meant Kim K took the red carpet solo. It doesn't seem like she had an issue with that, though. After all, she took a "less is more" approach with this one—wearing a simple white Vivienne Westwood Couture slip dress—she still managed to make a statement.
