Last night, Diane von Furstenberg and Tina Brown hosted the 6th Annual DVF Awards, which celebrates extraordinary women---and they certainly weren't in short supply: Naomi Campbell, Dakota Fanning, Maggie Gyllenhaal (all who stunned in DVF pieces) and Hillary Clinton arrived at the United Nations to honor those who show courage and leadership in helping other women.

With so many inspiring ladies in the same room, we couldn’t help but wonder who inspires them. And with Mother’s Day just two weeks away, it appears stars were feeling a certain nostalgia for mom.

Maggie Gyllenhaal"There are all sorts of sexier people who inspire me and influence me---but my mom, of course, is my biggest influencer." said Gyllenhaal. "Her mother was a doctor, and her aunt was a lawyer in the '40s. She comes from a generation where that was very unusual," she explained. "In a way, she made me believe that I could do anything and anything was available to me---and no, that’s not true, I can't do anything and anything is not available to me, but" she adds, "to start there as opposed to with the idea that certain things are just closed to you because you are a woman [is inspiring]."

As for what her own strength as a woman is, Gyllenhaal offered: "If I can support the actresses who are this next generation coming up, as opposed to being critical and judgmental and really go, like ‘you and you and you are awesome, and what you’re doing is worth supporting!’ I think our power as a sex and as a gender would be undeniable."
