“Everything goes with anything” is the principle that defines stylist Lori Goldstein’s aesthetic signature, an idea she embraces in her work. Long before reality shows catapulted stylists to household fame, Goldstein had created a body of work styling for some of the world’s best known photographers and celebrities (Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Michelle Williams, Demi Moore, Michael Jackson, and Ryan Gosling, to name a few) and brought to life pictures that were game-changers in fashion and entertainment. Her new book, Style Is Instinct (Harper Design, $80), out today, presents a comprehensive volume of her work, and includes more than 200 full-color photographs — complemented by Goldstein’s personal anecdotes about the styling process as well as behind-the-scenes stories of numerous shoots. Goldstein felt it was the right moment to release this book based on her instinct. “It is important to me to hopefully inspire or just document where I come from — what my experiences and world was," she told InStyle.com. Filled with strikingly beautiful images, Style Is Instinct exemplifies the fantasy of fashion. “Editorials speak to the imagination, and there might be one element that makes you think, ‘I want to try that’ or ‘I love those colors and prints together,’” she said of how women can use her book as a source of style inspiration. As for the way she dresses herself? “My personal style is just that, personal. I love mixing and seeing all different colors, prints and patterns together. It makes me happy. I also don’t like to dress up in the conventional way. I love comfort! I also love luxurious fabrics, fur, and jewels, and shoes and bags. So that’s where I have my fun. Fashion makes me happy and I try to make sure I feel that joy on the way out the door."
