We Tried It: Our Photo Editor Replaced His Coffee with Caffeine-Infused Skincare for Two Weeks
Can caffeine-infused skincare replace your 10 AM run to Starbucks? A jolt of caffeine, more specifically a Venti latte, is usually our go-to way to kick start our morning routine, but the additive also proves to impart a firming effect on your complexion when incorporated into skincare products. We asked InStyle.com Photo Editor Alex Reside to substitute his morning cup of Joe for Pacific Shaving Company's Caffeinated Shaving Cream and Aftershave duo to see if the ingredient had the same energizing effect on his mood as it did on his complexion. Keep reading to find out if it worked!
I ditched my morning coffee and shaved with Caffeinated Shaving Cream two weeks (yes, really). Here's what happened:
A typical day begins with me hitting snooze on my iPhone at least twice until I annoy my dog and wife enough to the point that they both get in my face begging me to get up. My first question is always "Did either of you make coffee?" so when InStyle.com Assistant Beauty Editor Marianne Mychaskiw dropped off Pacific Shaving Company's Caffeinated Shaving Cream and Aftershave ($16 for a set of two; pacificshaving.com) at my desk, I could hardly contain my excitement.
I had so many questions: Will I no longer need my morning coffee? Will it make me too jittery to have with my morning coffee? Lastly, can I eat it? This led to a bit of research on caffeinated grooming supplies, which ultimately gave a resounding "no" to all of my questions.
So what are the benefits of caffeinated grooming products? Having caffeine in you daily grooming routine actually won't replace your morning coffee, but it will help wake your skin up. What makes shaving in the morning with caffeinated products such a good idea is that you do absorb a certain amount of caffeine into your bloodstream because of how small the molecules are. So while you do get a little tiny caffeine kick, the real work is what the caffeine does to constrict blood flow, which can help tighten up pores and reduce redness. Caffeinated shaving creams like Pacific Shaving Company's products are high in antioxidants and help promote healthy skin. It's kind of a win-win.
But does it work? I shaved for 2 weeks with Pacific Shaving Company's Shaving Cream and After Shave, and I actually found it quite enjoyable. The first few times I ditched my morning coffee to see how the caffeine felt, but truth be told I wasn't able to make it past 8:30 a.m. without a cup of real coffee. That being said, I definitely left the sink feeling more awake (though that could have been all the water splashed on my face afterwards). As far as the shave was concerned, it went really well. I'm used to having the aerosol foam shaving creams, so squeezing Pacific Shaving Company's Shaving Cream out of a tube was a little different, but it still manages to get that foamy texture after rubbing it in small circles on my face. I struggle to avoid redness after shaving my neck, but using their caffeinated aftershave in tandem with the shaving cream did a lot to minimize my poor shaving technique.
I definitely noticed the difference between normal shaving cream and the caffeinated shaving cream---sadly not for the added caffeine boost but, for the reduced redness benefits and the overall way my skin felt after shaving. I'd recommend it to my guy friends, and Pacific Shaving Company's two-pack of Shaving Cream and After Shave is only $16, so you don't even have to be Jay-Z to afford it. Just don't count on it cutting down your coffee costs.
