Uzo Aduba’s Advice for Feeling Confident: “Do Not Follow the Haters"
Uzo Aduba is making the rounds on Golden Globes weekend, as she’s nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role on Orange Is the New Black as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren. One stop she made? The 2016 Film Independent Filmmaker Grant and Spirit Award Nominees Brunch, which she co-hosted with Mr. Robot’s breakout star and fellow Golden Globe nominee, Rami Malek.
The casual midday soiree, held at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood, toasted to the nominees of the Spirit Awards—which will be announced during a beachside ceremony on February 27—as well as served as an opportunity to award $75,000 in grants to up-and-coming filmmakers. Many Spirit Award nominees were in attendance, including Cate Blanchett (in Delpozo), Brie Larson (in Gabriela Hearst), Bel Powley (in Gucci), and more.
Before announcing the grant winners and dipping into the brunch options, which included eggs benedict, herb-crusted salmon, and seemingly unending plates of bacon (yum!), Aduba explained that she got where she is today as a result of believing in herself. “I wish I could tell girls and women one thing: You are enough, just as you are, as you came into this world, you are perfect and proportionally enough,” she told us. “Women are inundated with ideas of no, ideas of 'I can’t,' ideas of 'Stop here, that’s enough for you.' Do not follow the haters. Go further. Whatever the dream is in your heart, go for it, and don’t let anybody stop you.”
She certainly has followed her own advice. “The only thing that I can do well is be Uzo, so let me just do that. I’m enjoying it.”
The Film Independent Spirit Awards will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 in Santa Monica. Watch them live on IFC at 5 p.m. EST. Click the picture above to see more of the best moments from the hottest parties of Golden Globes.
