There's a Reason Why Olivia Pope Wore All Black on Last Night's Scandal, Plus How-To Get Her Look
Scandal fans, rejoice! Our favorite Thursday night drama is back from a months-long hiatus. In last episode's cliffhanger, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) was kidnapped from her apartment mid-dance party with Jake Ballard (Scott Foley). This episode picks up from there and even though we learn few details about her captors and whereabouts, hostage Olivia Pope fights for her life with no one to save her but herself. With that mindset, Pope gets crafty with her escape plan, using the wire from her Heidi Klum Intimates underwire demi bra to flee through a locked window in the bathroom. Although her first plan fizzles, she uses the wire from her second bra cup to break off a pipe from the sink and bash a captor's head.
That underwire bra wasn't the only noteworthy item of Pope's from the episode. Costume designer, Lyn Paolo, received dozens of inquiries on the all black loungewear Pope wears as well. "We had her in black on purpose," Paolo told InStyle.com of Pope's Rag & Bone silk shell, La Perla silk pants, and The Row oversized cardigan. "Something bad was going to happen and we used her wardrobe as a precursor to that."
Because she wears this particular outfit throughout the whole episode, from her apartment to a dank dungeon cell, Paolo admits that they bought and destroyed five cardigans from The Row in order to follow the storyline accurately. "Kerry teased me about it because I couldn't believe we were cutting up that many expensive cardi's," Paolo explained. "But there was the pre-wine spill cardi, then the wine spill cardi, then the pre-cell cardi, so on and so forth. It really held up throughout all the stages of her captivity."
Scandal fans, take note! If you're looking for your own set of Olivia-approved loungewear and possibly life-saving underwire bra, we've put together a more affordable look just for you. Shop the outfit below, and be sure to tune in next Thursday on ABC as the drama of Pope's kidnapping continues.
