This week's episode of The Mindy Project was extra special because in addition to it being the Christmas episode, it also featured flashbacks to Dr. Mindy Lahiri's (Mindy Kaling) first week of work way back in 2007. This meant a whole lot of different outfits—including some really fun holiday ensembles! And apparently we found out that Mindy thought of the selfie, or "selfer" as she called it, way before its time.

The episode kicked off in the present day with a bickering Mindy and Danny, who are going through a rough time in their relationship right now, hanging out in the apartment doing various holiday activities like baking gingerbread cookies and watching Christmas specials. Mindy wore a really fun Kenzo sequined sweater in the opening as well as a Tanya Taylor ‘Rita’ Dash sweater with an Alexander McQueen skirt, a BB Dakota ‘Harlow’ plaid shift dress with an Equipment polka dot blouse and some really fun Christmas-themed Nick & Nora Downhill Sock Monkey flannel pajamas.

But we hadn't seen anything yet. Cut to Mindy's first day of work at Shulman & Associates and Mindy wearing a fabulous bright pink custom made suit and blouse with Chanel earrings and a pink tweed coat with a Peter Pan collar (below). Costume designer Salvador Pérez told InStyle, "I knew about the flashback months in advance, so I was able to really be lavish. I thought she would wear that suit all day, so we spent a fortune on it and then she [Kaling] was like 'Oh, I want to do a fashion show' and ended up wearing three different outfits on her first day. I was like 'OK, Mindy!'" He noted that they lined the suit in the same fabric as the blouse and then added a pearl and crystal detail. "It was one of the most lavish things we have made on the show," he said. He noted that he loved that in this episode Mindy says, "Part of my professional identity is dressing in a way that is appealing only to women. I changed my outfit three times today, not that any of you noticed."

During her first day of work—remember she wore three outfits!—she also wore a purple Magaschoni dress with black lace paneling (below). "Those dresses with a side panel just give you a great silhouette," Pérez noted.

Her final outfit of the day was a bright royal blue Manoush skirt and an Iso black and blue blouse (below).

Finally, back in the present day, Mindy sported a Kin Ship Goods Good Morning sweater with a J.Crew puffer vest and Uggs (below). "We love our J. Crew vests," said Pérez. Though there were a lot of outfits to coordinate, Pérez said, "It was a lot of fun. Normally there would have been a Christmas party, but instead I got to put all my energy into the flashbacks." But we were glad he managed to incorporate some festive garb in their as well. "Any time I can use sparkles and sequins, it's a good thing."
