Though it was one of the most dramatic episodes of The Mindy Project this week, Mindy's style was still on top, as always. The show's Emmy-nominated costume designer, Salvador Perez, spoke with InStyle about the challenge of dressing Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) for this episode, which included one of the most serious scenes in the entire series.
The first outfit we see Mindy in—as she spends the first few minutes of the episode in bed with Danny!—is a fun parrot print shirt by Alice & Olivia with a Diane von Furstenberg python print pencil skirt and a matching blue shell by August Silk.
Then it was on to a Mary Katrantzou knitted dress which Perez was sad to put a lab coat over because it was "so fabulous." He paired it with Fendi yellow pumps.
For Mindy's big date night outfit with Danny, Perez selected a gorgeous Carven sheer-panel lace shirt dress in dramatic red. He paired it with the black-and-gold coat from his Mindy-inspired Gilt coat collection and a matching red headband. "She loves the headbands. They are her go-to accessory. She has an entire headband wall," he said.
Salvador was especially excited about her next outfit: a bright pink Moschino dress with a chain link pattern. "It was so delicious I made sure she had to wear it for a really long scene," Perez told InStyle.
Finally, came the dramatic ending which included—SPOILER ALERT!—a very big fight with Danny. He selected a a stunning Valentino faux leather-trimmed coat in black. We knew she was going to have to fight with Danny so the task was how do we make her look like Mindy but serious? That speech was so heartbreaking. I have to make her Mindy cute, but you have to believe that this is a big moment and it really was one of the most serious episodes in the entire series," Perez said.
Perez couldn't reveal much about the next episode except that it will feature some flashbacks, including Dr. Mindy Lahiri on her first day at the job seven years ago, and a scene where she wears a pretty in pink Chanel-like suit. We can hardly wait.
