Whether you’re looking to soften brittle strands or give your scalp a detox, a pre-shampoo hair treatment can help you achieve that. Though we’ll admit it does seem a bit strange to apply a conditioning formula before your actual shampoo, adding this extra step to your routine can seriously change your hair game for the better.

To make the most of the treatment, start by finding one that caters to your particular concerns. If your strands are dry and over-styled, a nourishing oil formula like Leonor Greyl’s Pre-Shampoo Oil Treatment ($59; can instantly reverse the damage. While your hair is dry, work the product from the mid-shaft to the ends and leave it on for five to 10 minutes (or overnight for serious repair) before washing out.

Another pre-shampoo we love that can benefit any hair type is Kérastase Chronologiste The Gommage ($44; When massaged onto damp hair, it actually exfoliates the scalp and removes debris and product build-up without drying it out.

When it comes to dull, lusterless tresses, we recommend Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment ($9;, which amps up the gloss factor with ingredients like olive and almond oils. For textured hair, Motions Enhance & Define Pre-Wash Detangling Butter ($7; is also packed with shea butter and coconut oil to infuse each strand with moisture and lessen the chance of breakage.
