Styling Tips from the Fall 2014 Runways
Runway shows serve up more than trends. They also show us how to wear and reinvent key pieces that we already own. So even if a brand new fall wardrobe isn't in your budget this season, you can still update your look with these quick and easy tips.
For starters, take out your favorite sleeveless dress that you normally would've put away for fall and pair it with opera-length gloves for a special night out à la the Chanel and Vera Wang runways (above). To pull it off, you’ll want to wear a moody-toned dress with a subtle print that is far from skimpy (read: no cleavage, no knees). For an added bonus, slide on some bracelets and bangles over the glove.
To dress up a regular top, throw a belt over it. The look was shown on both the Balenciaga (above, left) and Theory (above, right) runway. For this figure-flattering look, you'll want to employ a wide belt vs. a skinny belt (the thicker the belt, the more structure it will give you). You can also put this tip to the test to create a faux-peplum: just cinch your belt a tad tighter to pop out the bottom hem of your top.
For fall, we saw tons of cozy turtlenecks all over the runways—a classic top that lives in every woman's wardrobe. To take the traditional top up a notch, layer it with a solid, choker-style necklace as shown on the Philosophy (above, left) and Prabal Gurung (above, right) runway. To make the piece pop, wear it with a monochrome look crafted of soft, subtle colors. You want the necklace to be bold and the focus of your look. Last but not least, when shopping for your necklace, be sure to choose one that will accommodate the bulkiness of a turtleneck.
