The Worldwide Orphans Foundation, founded in 1997 by Dr. Jane Aronson, aims to transform the lives of orphaned children to help them become healthy, independent, productive members of their communities and the world. Funny-man Seth Meyers hosted the evening, which honored Diane von Furstenberg and Dr. Sophie Mengistu for being exceptional WWO ambassadors and supporters. In her acceptance speech, von Furstenberg touched on the importance of WWO. "Worldwide Orphans has saved 50,000 children! That is amazing! Dr. Jane is the most wonderful, extraordinary person, and I am just honored to be here and to help her," the designer stated. Elie Tahari, Alexi Meyers, Jenna Lyons, and Ann Curry, were also in attendance, each of whom seemed to have a personal connection to the cause. "It’s a wonderful thing, this cause. When I was young, I was in an orphanage myself," Tahari, who was honored at last year's gala, told InStyle.com. Seth Meyers got involved in the cause through the encouragement of the women in his life. "Amy Poehler, who was honored with Dr. Jane is 2009, has been speaking about WWO to me since then. Also, my wife has been working for the organization. I was lucky enough to have these strong-willed women in my life introduce me to the strongest-willed woman, being Dr. Jane," Meyers told InStyle.com. The evening also included a live auction, where items including Saturday Night Live tickets, an apprenticeship with DVF, and a personalized voicemail message from Hugh Jackman were auctioned off. All in all, the event raised over $1.3 million for the commendable organization.
