Serena Williams did not come to play. (Not this time, at least.)

The 37-year-old tennis star stepped out in a major fashion look with her husband Alexis Ohanian, 35, on Wednesday evening to attend Adweek’s 2018 Brand Genius Awards gala in New York City. Williams was honored with the trade publication’s Brand Visionary Award, which was presented by Vogue editor-in-chief (and one of Serena's pals), Anna Wintour.

While the event was filled with a number of stylish attendees, the athlete stole the show in a cleavage-baring Vera Wang midi dress, featuring an interesting mix of plaid and silver sequins as well as a sheer garter belt. She accessorized with dangly diamond earrings and a pair of silver bedazzled Christian Louboutin heels. Ohanian, who co-founded Reddit, went the more classic route in a black tuxedo.

Williams may be globally recognized for athletic achievements, but her tendency to take fashion risks is equally as impressive — no one else in tennis is making headlines for tutus or catsuits, after all.

The superstar has found many avenues to share her style savvy, from launching her own eponymous clothing line (of which Meghan Markle is a big fan) to serving as an ambassador for sportswear brands like Nike. But long before her Nike deal, she was a Puma girl, signing her first major endorsement deal with the German brand at just 14-years-old.

“[My father] had me in the room with all the execs. I remember sitting at this massive board table and falling asleep because it was after midnight,” she told Adweek. “But he wanted me to be in on the negotiations and know the ins and out of business, to understand how things operate and to be successful in business.”

Now 23 years later, Williams has been able to brand herself as more than just an athlete but also an entrepreneur, and a stylish one at that.
