For the past several months, we’ve been following Selena Gomez’s every style move with a watchful eye. The “Hands to Myself” songstress has been all about embracing “fashion and modernity in a super fun, youthful way,” says her stylist Kate Young, and Monday night’s Grammy Awards were no different. The starlet sported a sparkly navy custom cut-out Calvin Klein gown with Giuseppe Zanotti silver mules, a massive David Webb cocktail ring, and Norman Silverman diamond hoops.

“We were talking a lot about disco, Studio 54 and Donna Summer,” says Young. “If you think about Studio 54 at that time, it was all about those Ron Galella pictures of Diane von Furstenberg, Bianca Jagger, and Donna Summer dancing in these sparkly Halston dresses having a really good time. For Selena, it wasn’t about being serious or stiff, it’s not the Oscars where you have to wear your best jewelry and it’s a gala, but being sexy and feeling like she was going out.”

The Calvin Klein creation, which Young calls a “gown constructed like a bathing suit,” took about two weeks to complete and was meant to evoke a party vibe. “We were thinking a lot about color, and the silhouette of a crop top with a long skirt is cooler than just a strapless dress.” She continues, “She is a really strong, powerful girl, who is turning into a major force. The clothes have to reflect that.”
