Selena Gomez Explained Why She Revealed Her Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis On Miley Cyrus's Show
When Selena Gomez let the world know that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, it was on Miley Cyrus's Instagram show, Bright Minded. While the news made waves, the platform left some fans scratching their heads. Sure, the two have a long, well-publicized friendship, but the news seemed more appropriate for a magazine or newspaper, not a show viewers catch on their phones. In a new interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine, Gomez explained that part of what made her comfortable to share the news was the fact that Cyrus's show was so casual and "raw."
"I happened to catch it one day and loved what she was doing and knew I wanted to be a guest,” Gomez told WSJ. She added that she "liked the rawness of the show."
Gomez continued, saying that Cyrus's show was what people need right now. She sees it as the perfect combination of Cyrus's charisma and the realness of a DIY project.
"I feel like people are yearning for that type of realism right now. "Not something overly produced,” Gomez said. "Miley has never been afraid to take risks or put herself out there. This new role really seems to suit her, and you can tell she’s really enjoying herself."
During her appearance on the show, Gomez said that she "equal parts terrified and relieved" to let people know about her diagnosis. After she did reveal the news, however, it was different. She said she was "terrified because the veil was lifted but relieved that I finally had the knowledge of why I had suffered with various depressions and anxieties for so many years."
Cyrus added that she usually gets guests to appear on the show via DM, an unorthodox but effective method. With Gomez, however, it didn't take much negotiating. She was happy to come on the show.
"I am the ultimate slide-into-the-DMs!" Cyrus explained. "This is the way that I have communicated and actually gotten things done for years."
