Scandal Fashion Recap: Why Olivia Pope Wears Her Colorblock Poncho
While Cyrus Beene creates a new presidential candidate and President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) is busy (we’ll just say he was busy) on this week's episode of Scandal, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) stews over her father's current state of affairs and Jake's (Scott Foley) new girlfriend (what?!). Huck tries to convince her that Papa Pope is up to no good since he's always up to no good, but because of Jake's very distracting admission of a new lady love, she has been blind to what has been going on around her as of late. In the end, she realizes that her father obviously has something up his sleeve.
For part of the episode, Olivia wears a multi-colored Sandro poncho over a black Michael Kors top, black AG jeans, and Coach boots. "We wanted something she could get dressed in quickly and be covered up and protected in a way," the show's costume designer, Lyn Paolo, tells InStyle. "Jake's just told her he has a girlfriend. She's figuring it all out."
As for the colorblocking in the sweater? "She's transitioning between the old Olivia and the new Olivia," Paolo explains. "It's an arc piece for us. This new palette combines the black from her jeans and top which is a palette we used when she was captured, the camel from the old Olivia's wardrobe, and the baby blue of Mellie's typical wardrobe. It's all old Olivia colors and then one new Mellie color, so it bridges her two worlds."
