Even if Sarah Jessica Parker had any jitters about her much-anticipated return to HBO for the new series Divorce, she could always count on the support of her No. 1 fan—not to mention husband of nearly 20 years—Matthew Broderick.
In the latest edition of The Jess Cagle Interview, the actress reveals that Broderick hadn’t actually seen the final version of the dramedy’s opening episode until Divorce‘s star-studded premiere on Oct. 5. “That was the first time that we had seen it. He saw a rough cut of the pilot months and months and months ago,” shares Parker, 51.
The Sex and the City favorite says that, thankfully, there’s no awkwardness in watching a series about marital dysfunction with 54-year-old Broderick, to whom she’s been married since 1997.
“I guess for both of us, it’s still so separate. It’s work. It doesn’t sit in comparison,” she says. “I think Matthew is still looking at it like a short story he read. I think he was really surprised at how much he loved it. He just kept saying, ‘It’s just so good. It’s just so good.’ ”

Parker, who shares three children with Broderick, reveals she also celebrated the show’s debut with actress J. Smith-Cameron and Broderick’s close friend playwright Kenneth Lonergan, who delivered similarly positive feedback for her latest endeavor.
“His best friend was on my left, Kenny Lonergan, and J. Smith-Cameron, who’s going to be in the show later. She’s coming on two important episodes at the end. Really, really amazing,” Parker teases. “To hear Kenny, too. He was just like, ‘It’s just so good,’ and I was just so thrilled.”
Divorce airs Sundays (10 p.m. ET) on HBO.
