The $39 Matte Lipstick Salma Hayek Pinault Wore to the Oscars Did Not Budge
The star's makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic reveals his secrets on how to get lipstick to last.
Soft glam makeup was one of the biggest beauty trends on the 2020 Oscars red carpet, and Salma Hayek Pinault nailed the look with her Greek Goddess-inspired glowing eyes and muted pink lip.
On a night like the Oscars, celebrity glam teams aren't always able to do touch ups, so Hayek Pinault's makeup needed to hold up on the red carpet and during the entire show — especially since she was a presenter.
Luckily, the Like a Boss star had celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic create her look for the night, and it did not budge. Here, he gives us the breakdown on the star's Oscars glam.
Dedivanovic, who exclusively used Yves Saint Laurent products for the actress' look, tells InStyle that he opened up her eyes and gave them a gorgeous glow by brushing Sequin Crush Eyeshadow in N. 1 Legendary Gold all over the lids, then added a few coats of Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils to her lashes.
Since Dedivanovic needed to ensure Hayek Pinault could walk the red carpet and get on the Oscars stage without her pink lip fading or feathering, he was strategic with his application. "For Salma, I didn’t use products that are too wet or oily since I wouldn’t be able to do touchups," he tells us in an email. Instead, Dedivanovic used Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Matte Lipstick in N. 8 Contrary Fuchsia.
To ensure it wouldn't move or wear off mid-night, he applied All Hours Setting Powder with a brush to Hayek Pinault's lips in-between coats of lipstick and blotted it with a tissue. "The layer of powder helps the lipstick to grip even more," he says.

Once the shade was on, Dedivanoic also applied a concealer to keep the color from bleeding. "I used the Touche Éclat High Cover Concealer in N. 2.5 Peach with a sharp flat brush and applied it on both sides of the outer bottom lip and set it with All Hours Setting Powder in B30 Almond," he explains. "This gives the lips a nice lift on the outer corners and keeps them from feathering."
The takeaway? Don't forget the concealer and setting powder the next time you need your matte lipstick to stay on way past your first sip of morning coffee.
