Sally Rooney's Conversations With Friends Is Coming to Hulu
Fans of Hulu's Normal People can expect more of a very good thing. The streaming service announced that it would be adapting Sally Rooney's critically acclaimed novel Conversations with Friends. The new show, which is a continued partnership between Hulu and BBC Three, will be a 12-episode limited series and bring back much of the behind-the-scenes team from Normal People. BBC Three announced plans to adapt Conversations With Friends back in February, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Sally Rooney perfectly and beautifully captures the complicated dynamics of relationships in her stories. After bringing that to life in Normal People to an overwhelmingly positive response, we are honored to do the same with Conversations With Friends," Beatrice Springborn, Hulu's vice president of content, said in a statement. "We are excited to continue our creative partnership with Sally, Element Pictures, Lenny [Abrahamson] and the BBC, which has been a dream collaboration."
During an event back in February, BBC drama controller Piers Wenger said that the British broadcaster would "commission work from Sally Rooney for as long as she is writing," which is good news for fans of prestige TV and the author's brand of relationships and friendships.
How to Stream It
Like Normal People, when it becomes available, Conversations With Friends will be exclusive to Hulu. Each episode will be 30 minutes long.
When Will It Air?
There's no date set just yet for the show's debut, as it's still in pre-production. However, viewers can expect plenty of publicity leading up to the premiere, much like Hulu did with Normal People.
Who Will Be in the Cast?
Like the show's premiere date, there was no formal announcement of the actors being considered for the project, which involves four main characters named Frances, Bobbi, Nick, and Melissa.
Normal People's stars, Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, had breakout roles in the series and it's unclear whether the team behind Conversations With Friends will opt for up-and-coming talent or go with established names, the way that Hulu did with Little Fires Everywhere. That show cast Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington as its leads.
However, the show's creative team was announced: Lenny Abrahamson will be lead director and Alice Birch will be lead writer, both of them worked on Normal People.
What is the book about?
Conversations With Friends follows a pair of Dublin college students, Frances and Bobbi, who connect (in more ways than one) with an older married couple, Melissa and Nick. Naturally, questions of fidelity, sexual freedom, and love between the friends and the couple come up and the characters' lives get pushed in unexpected ways. The New Yorker called it a "new kind of adultery novel."
