Red carpet fashion can sometimes become a train of perfectly glamorous and too predictable gowns. So imagine our delight to see Rooney Mara really going for a fashion look at last night's Governors Awards at the Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles.

Mara has always been reliable for incredible red carpet fashion—she's especially known for her moody takes on goth-gorgeous Givenchy gowns in a monochroamtic palette—but this ruffled creation with a red, gold-trimmed jacket, both by Alexander McQueen, truly took the runway to the red carpet. It takes a certain sartorial know-how to carry off such a directional point of view and Mara nailed it with her confidence and simple beauty choices—her hair was slicked back, letting her outfit take center stage.

Apparently, it wasn't only Mara who was willing to take some fashion risks. Her Carol co-star Cate Blanchett was the epitome of chic in Armani Prive trousers and gently draped top.

Similarly, Saoirse Ronan, who has won over the critics for her latest leading role in Brooklyn, defied convention in a romantic pink print dress. Meanwhile, Helen Mirren proved you don't have to be a young, innocent thing to rouse the red carpet in white. She wore a textured lace sleeved top paired with a sweeping pleated skirt. Pretty unforgettable if you ask us.
