Rihanna Just Endorsed a Midterm Candidate
Rihanna's more than 65 million Instagram followers got a bit of a surprise today. Interrupting the usual stream of fashion moments, beauty looks, and occasional memes was a call to action for all of her Floridian followers. The Cut reports that Bad Gal Riri wants voters to know that she's supporting Andre Gillum in the Sunshine State's gubernatorial race.
In a photo proclaiming "Grab em by the midterms," Rihanna — who posted a list of last-minute voter registration dates back on October 9 — urged her fans to perform their civic duty and head to the polls. She not only voiced her support of Gillum, but also her stance on Amendment 4, which involves restoring voting rights to "felony convictions after they complete all terms of their sentence including parole or probation."
"You have the opportunity to make history this election. The US has only had four black Governors in its entire history, and we can help make #AndrewGillum the next one and Florida’s first," she wrote.
"If you’re tired of feeling like you don’t matter in the political process,” Rihanna continued, "know the most important thing you can do in supporting a candidate is finding someone who will take on critical issues such as: making minimum wage a livable wage, paying teachers what their worth, ensuring criminal justice reform, making healthcare a right, and repealing Stand Your Ground."
This isn't the first time Rihanna's made her political leanings known. She famously turned down an opportunity to perform at the 2019 Super Bowl because of the NFL's treatment of Colin Kaepernick. The Cut also notes that in the past, she's met with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife to discuss the importance of educating young girls. With many calling this upcoming election one of the most important in generations, here's hoping that Rihanna can mobilize her fans to join the conversation.
