Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for Best Actress for her singing role in Walk the Line, but that doesn’t mean she thinks recording vocals is easy. In fact, filming her new animated movie Sing might just have been her most challenging part yet.

“You sing a lot of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. Was that harder to sing it this way?” Ellen DeGeneres asked her on Tuesday’s show. “Oh it was much harder. I grew up wanting to be a country music singer, so the Walk the Line stuff was more in my heart,” Witherspoon said.

“I actually ran into Taylor and Katy while I was doing the movie, and I was like, ‘You guys, this is really hard.’ And they were like, ‘Yeah, we know,’” she joked.

Jennifer Hudson and Tori Kelly, they’d be like in and out, in and out. Where they’d be like, ‘Um, are you available tomorrow to come back? And then maybe the next day?’ And I ended up recording, like it took me 17 days to record three songs,” the Sing star said.

While we’re sure the finished product sounds amazing, Witherspoon’s 4-year-old son Tennessee has some reservations about the film. “My 4-year-old saw it, but he’s super confused. Every morning he wakes up, he’s like, ‘Hold on. It’s your voice, but you’re not a pig. But your voice is coming out of the pig,” she told DeGeneres.

“I kept trying to explain it and it’s animated, and I finally was like, ‘You know what? It’s just magic,” Witherspoon joked.
