Recreate the Makeup From Jem and the Holograms, Step by Step
There’s no Halloween costume that screams “truly outrageous” quite like Jem and the Holograms. The cartoon girl band first ruled in the ‘80s, and a live-action movie based on the series is in theaters now. That means it’s more appropriate than ever to transform yourself into a pink-loving pop star on Oct. 31, and recreating Jem’s beauty look at home is surprisingly easy. You need just a few key products, according to the movie’s makeup artist Mary Klimek, who turned Nashville star Aubrey Peeples into the modern-day Jem for the big screen.
“Glitter is essential to Jem and the Holograms,” Klimek recently told InStyle. “You can use it on your eyes, lips, and all over your face to be very sparkly.” When transforming Peeples into Jem for the movie, Klimek didn’t hold back. “I think I still have glitter running through my veins, because we used so much of it,” she said. “There’s never a time that Jem isn’t wearing some sort of luminescent sparkle throughout the movie—and she had a pink lip at all times, too.”
One of Jem’s signature looks also featured bursts of hot pink makeup that extend from her eyes to her hairline, and you can recreate the makeup moment at home using products that already have the Holograms’ stamp of approval: the Sephora x Jem and the Holograms Collection. To find out exactly how to transform into Jem, we teamed up with the brand behind the movie’s official makeup kit, Sephora. The company's pro makeup artist Shawn Lumaban stopped by InStyle’s offices to help recreate the Jem and the Holograms look. Check out our step-by-step GIF tutorial with instructions below.
Using a medium eyeshadow brush, cover your entire eyelids with a metallic silver shade. To create a solid foundation for the glittery goodness to come, Lumaban used the “Mrs. Baily” hue from the Sephora + Jem And The Holograms Truly Outrageous Palette ($39; sephora.com). Then, take a darker shade of gray—like the “Jetta” shadow from the palette—to define the crease of your eyelid. Place the brush directly under the arch of your brows and sweep back and forth repeatedly. For added depth, apply the same color under the lower lash line using a smaller detailing brush.
Here comes the glitter! When it comes to pressing this on, more is always better. Generously apply a metallic shade, like Urban Decay's Mooniest Eyeshadow in Space Cowboy ($21; urbandecay.com) on top of the base colors to your sparkle-filled heart’s content.
Now it’s time to get the vibrant eye design just right—which, in this case, actually means using a lip product. Lumaban used "Music and Magic" from the Sephora + Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Liquid Lip Set ($25; sephora.com) to create a long-lasting look. Sketch the initial design by drawing two lines from underneath the center of your lower lid to your hairline, and then fill in the space between the lines.
To get Jem’s pink pout, line your lips with Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Lip Liner in “Jilted,” ($20; ulta.com). Then, use a lip brush to apply Sephora + Jem And The Holograms Truly Outrageous Lipstick ($16; sephora.com) all over your lips.
Top off your lip look with a holographic lip gloss, like “Fashion And Fame" from the Liquid Lip Set.
Add a pair of light-up star earrings ($7, amazon.com) and tease your hair with a touch of hairspray to complete your look. It’s showtime, Synergy!
