Twas the night before the royal wedding, 1981, and all through Clarence House, soon-to-be Princess Diana could be heard singing, "I'm going to marry the Prince of Wales tomorrow!" while riding a bicycle in circles.
This according to the book The Diana Chronicles, written by former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown. Like Meghan Markle—who tomorrow will walk down the aisle and to marry her own Prince—Diana was shrouded in drama in the days leading up to her wedding, but the then-20-year-old was nonetheless giddy to be married.
Brown writes that while on her way to speak with the Queen Mother's elderly page, Diana hopped on a boy's bike she spotted lying in the corner of Clarence House in London and began riding around and around while jingling the bell as she sang out. (As if you weren't already charmed by the late Princess.)
But not everything was bicycles and bells for Diana. Brown adds that the royal-to-be was a nervous wreck in the weeks leading up to her big day, and suffered from bulimia due to media scrutiny. She lost 14 lbs between March and her July 29 wedding, dropping from a 29 to 23.5 inch waist. Before she began riding her bike through the halls on the eve of her big day, Diana apparently ate so much that she was "sick as a parrot"—presumably to fit into her dress, which had to be taken in multiple times due to her weight loss.
Things seem, at least from the outside, to be a bit less hectic for Markle—family drama aside. The bride-to-be will spend the Friday evening before the big day with her mother, Doria Ragland, at Cliveden House, while Prince Harry and his best man, big bro Prince William, will spend the night at Coworth Park, a luxury hotel between Ascot and Windsor.
We'd like to imagine that Meghan is just as giddy for her own big day as Diana was. Bike or no bike.
