Pretty Little Liars Halloween Episode: Costume Details from the Designer
A new season of Pretty Little Liars doesn’t return until January, but ABC Family gave fans a one-off Halloween-themed episode—and some more Team A sleuthing—last night. The special was especially fun to work on for costume designer Mandi Line, who custom designed the outfits worn by Ashley Benson’s Hanna, Lucy Hale’s Aria, Shay Mitchell’s Emily. “The writers come to me with the concept, but it’s really loose so I can put my spin on it,” Line told InStyle.com. Her spin: Aria as Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby and Emily as a modern-day Barbarella. “For Aria, I wanted her to pop in a great color,” Line said. For that, she outfitted her in a flapper-style look by Sue Wong, all hand-beaded and “weighing more than Lucy does!” Line created the accessories herself, placing each of the feathers and rhinestones on the ribbon headpiece. As for Emily, the entire modern Barbarella—inspired by Jane Fonda’s 1968 film—was pieced together by hand, and the outfit connected to the boots. “You can’t find this,” said Line. “I had four shoppers finding the right fabrics. We made the entire thing, even her boots! It’s pretty painted on and she loved it.” And this is different than Emily's typical style. "As Emily, Shay usually dresses tomboyish," said Line. "When she goes to dances she gets sexy. And when we can, it’s nice to make her sexy." The new Pretty Little Liars season premieres on ABC Family Tuesday, January 8th at 8 p.m. EST.
