The Orange Is the New Black Scene That Was a Nightmare to Film
Welcome to Orange Is the New Black Week! Each day this week, we're bringing you exclusive content about the ladies of Litchfield ahead of the Netflix show's season premiere on June 17. Click here for everything you need to know.
The wait is over. Orange Is the New Black season 4 drops on Netflix this Friday, and we can’t wait for our next visit to Litchfield Penitentiary with all of our favorite inmates. Ahead of the premiere, we spoke to actress Selenis Leyva, who plays sassy Gloria Mendoza (above, right), and she filled us in on one of the most memorable--and difficult--scenes to film. "Gosh, the lake was awful to shoot," she told InStyle. "It was beautiful, but it was awful to shoot! There, I said it … But it was beautiful to watch. I cried when I saw it. It was amazing." (We did, too, Selenis.)
This scene in the season 3 finale was a favorite among InStyle staffers and OITNB fans alike, but most of us never considered what went in to making it so unforgettable. Leyva went on to explain that the water was freezing, which made for a rough shoot, requiring the cast to wear wetsuits under their prison jumpsuits.
“I remember how cold it was and I remember those wetsuits. Every time I had to go to the bathroom I had to peel it off, and I have curves. And to peel that suit over my curves was interesting. So finally, someone said, ‘Just pee in your wetsuit—it’ll keep you warm.’ And I was like, ‘That’s disgusting. I’m not going to do it.’ So I took my wetsuit off and I was freezing the whole time. Some people were peeing in their wetsuits. Gross."
We will never think of that scene the same again. Be sure to tune in Friday for all the crazy antics to come this season.
