No Ball Gowns Here! Coco Rocha Designs a Cinderella Collection for the Modern-Day Princess
Coco Rocha is giving Cinderella a makeover! The model has joined forces with HSN and Disney to dream up a Cinderella-themed clothing line to launch next month on March 9. But this is no ordinary, run-of-the-mill princess collection. There aren't any sweeping frou-frou ball gown creations, glass-slipper motifs or tiaras. There's none of that. Instead, body-hugging peplum pencil skirts (a.k.a. "the perfect baby bump skirt" that hid the expectant mom's five-month pregnancy when she modeled them), sleek fitted pants, and tough embellished moto jackets reign supreme. The 19-piece "Modern Princess" collection is tailor-made for, you guessed it, the modern-day girl.
"My vision of a modern princess is a woman who has confidence in her own skin," Rocha tells InStyle, pointing to modern-day royalty, like Elvis and Beyonce as inspiration. "She isn't afraid to take risks in fashion, she has grown into herself and has come to love herself and express her own individuality."
And who better than Rocha, who not only grew up with Disney, but whose life story remarkably resembles that of Cinderella's, to design this collection? "Everyone has that Cinderella rags-to-riches story; it's a story that everyone can relate to," she says. "For me personally, I grew up in a small town, I wasn't the cute girl, I got picked on, and then one day an agent—or a fairy godmother—finds you and says, 'Have you considered modeling?' and your life changes."
As a newly minted designer, Rocha was committed to bringing her modern Cinderella vision to life. Designed to reflect her own aesthetic, which veers girly tough, downtown-chic, Rocha was involved in every step of the process, from picking out fabrics to the meaningful prints—the butterflies symbolize transformation. "It's hard for a model to transition to other things and to be taken seriously," she reveals, "and I want to be taken seriously." Done and done!
The collection (priced between $70 and $230) launches on hsn.com March 9. In the meantime, watch the exclusive behind-the-scenes video, below:
