Think about your most awkward moment. Maybe you accidentally answered a question that was posed to someone else or jumbled your words in a nervous rush. Now, imagine that moment happening on live television, initially viewed by millions, and then posted on social media for the all of the internet-using world to see. For Rami Malek, that cringe-inducing hypothetical is very, very real — in fact, it happened last night.

Full disclosure, the moment in question happened after both his film and his personal performance had won Golden Globes, so don’t feel too bad for him.

Anyway, as he and the rest of the Bohemian Rhapsody players shuffled off stage after earning the final award of the night, Malek attempted to greet presenter Nicole Kidman. Photo evidence dictates that the pair has met at least twice before — the most recent instance of which had happened just two days prior.

So the Mr. Robot star, visibly uncertain of how to proceed onstage, extended his arms out to his industry acquaintance. Kidman swerved on her heel at this very moment. Undeterred, Malek placed his hand on the small of her back, which she also ignored and continued to file off stage.

Guys, I’ve watched this at least 15 times now and it doesn’t get any less painful. And maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I think it’s very possible that Nicole really just didn’t see Rami coming. I mean, she’s two inches taller than him pre-heels, so with her Globes pumps on, someone of Malek’s height (5’9, according to the internet) really isn’t in her eyeline.

And OK, a hand on your back is hard not to feel, but as a woman in Hollywood for the past three decades she’s probably numb to the sensation. Literally all white men in the industry do is try to guide women in needlessly physical ways, so we wouldn’t blame her for being put off by the gesture.

Better luck next time, Rami.
