When you're in a serious relationship with someone, you tend to share a lot of things: the cost of rent, if you live together, dinners out, and even the occasional piece of clothing (okay, maybe that's more of a one-way street). But when the time comes to take that next step, would you consider sharing the cost of your engagement ring?

According to the Today show, going dutch on an engagement ring is a burgeoning trend among some couples, who say that doing so helps them save money in the long run. "Today, because both the man and woman earn money and contribute to the financials and the decision-making, it’s not surprising that both of them are involved in all aspects [of choosing and paying for the ring]," professional matchmaker Samantha Daniels told "I think it makes for a better connection between the two people."

Of course, not everyone agrees. "Couples are splitting the cost of an engagement ring," funny man Jimmy Fallon recently tweeted. "Because every girl dreams of hearing her man say, 'You owe me $2,000.'"
