You can’t stop NBC’s beat!
The network is gearing up to gift us with yet another live version of a splashy, hit musical next December. So what’s on deck? We’ll be returning to 1960s Baltimore thanks to the sunny reprisal of Hairspray, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Though deals for the production aren’t quite closed, NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt made the unofficial announcement at the 2016 Winter TCA Press Tour last week. “I’m happy to say that we are hopefully going to be produce a live new movie of Hairspray next December,” he said, adding that The Wiz producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are on board for the project.
“People have been saying to me since The Wiz, ‘Do this show, do that show,'” he told EW. “I’ve heard obscure titles and famous titles. Not everything’s going to be a big name to the whole audience. I don’t think there’s an infinite number of these that can be done. But we’re still doing it.”
This, of course, isn’t the first time the network will take a dive into the world of musicals. In addition to The Wiz, NBC has put together live TV adaptations of Peter Pan and The Sound of Music. So what can musical fanatics look forward to before Hairspray once more comes to life? We suggest tuning in to Grease: Live on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. ET on FOX.
