Responding to questions about her love life from pre-show host Charlamagne Tha God on Sunday, Grande promised him she would "send [Miller] your regards."
When Charlamagne prodded Grande about where Miller was, the singer responded, "Being supportive. It's OK to be alone even when you have a boo."
Grande and Miller were spotted leaving a Big Apple nightclub on Friday night just ahead of the show and after a trip to New York's Museum of Ice Cream.
The pair's relationship isn't too shocking—they collaborated on 2013's "The Way," and even shared a kiss in the accompanying music video.
Grande was later spotted hugging Miller in the audience after singing "Side to Side" with Nicki Minaj.
The 23-year-old was also on the receiving end of a joke about 2015's #donutgate, with Charlamagne advising her to not lick any pastries during the show.
Of performing—once again—with Minaj on the VMAs stage, Grande said, "I really genuinely love her. I feel like we have a very strong sisterhood ... I adore that woman."
