With just weeks to go, the Oscars race is heating up! And though some of the boldface stars will be getting most of the fanfare, when it comes to fashion in film, an artistic, nuanced approach could just go home with a little golden man.

Intrigued? Take a look at the film Mr. Turner. Set in the 19th Century at the dawn of the Impressionist art movement, it chronicles the work and life of visionary British painter J.M.W. Turner. Breaking the artistic standards of his time, Turner painted with a technique that was romantic, expressive, and moving. Academy Award-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran captured Turner’s eccentric character perfectly, working closely with director Mike Leigh and production designer Suzie Davies to create a visually compelling picture that rivals the artist’s work.

And it's not just dusty period stuff. There's plenty from Durran's work that work into today's fashion. Such as, bring a ruffled shirt into the now by pairing with sleek menswear trousers and an updated brogue. Or simply go for an iPhone case splashed with paint—now that’s a masterpiece.
