Mindy Project's Costume Designer Says a Mindy-Inspired Pajama Line Is in the Works
Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) was super stressed and tired from work this week on The Mindy Project, so we didn't get to see her usual fabulous work outfit ensembles. But we did see her second favorite thing to wear: Bedhead pajamas. This week, she sported a rich green pair for the most of the episode.
Mindy is well known for her deep love of pajamas and this season she may have sported some of her best yet. The show's Emmy-nominated costume designer Salvador Perez says he is so inspired by the fun pairs on the show—he says she wears about 50 pairs per season—that he thinks he would like to make a Mindy-inspired collection his next design project. "I'm very particular about pajamas with fabrics and colors so we were just thinking we should probably do a pajama line and ideally we would design our own fabrics," he told InStyle exclusively.
A pajama line would follow the Mindy Lahiri-inspired coat collection he designed for Gilt.com, which launched just last month and has already almost completely sold out. Perez said the the coat line exposure has given him the confidence to launch more collections. A Mindy cocktail dress is also on his horizon, he says.
Mindy Lahiri follows a great line of female television characters known for their sleepwear, including Ally McBeal, Lorelai Gilmore, and Carol Brady.
So how does Mindy Kaling feel about this? "Oh Mindy is definitely a pajama girl," Perez told us. Sounds like she's on board!
As for next week's looks, the costume designer says Mindy will be back in fabulous clothes for work. We can also expect to see her wearing more of Reese Witherspoon's Draper James line this season, like the "Hello Sugar" sweatshirt she wore on last week's episode.
