Last night’s The Mindy Project showed us a side of Dr. Mindy Lahiri that we never thought we’d see. Our favorite diva doctor and mom-to-be traded in her bold ensembles and brightly colored accessories for tracksuits. Yes, tracksuits. “It’s a very special Mindy Lahiri,” costume designer Salvador Perez tells InStyle.

The reason? Mindy is struggling with her confidence as she starts to gain pregnancy weight. Poor Mindy! To reflect her mood, they decided to take a page out of Morgan Tookers book and try out tracksuits. However, don’t for one second think that these looks weren’t tailored. “They were completely re-cut to be the most flattering things possible,” Perez reveals.

Initially they tried out bright pink and aqua tracksuits, but they decided that it didn’t fit the feel of the scene. “The whole point was she was depressed, so we had to go dark,” Perez says. “The bright colorful ones were adorable, but we couldn’t have her looking adorable or people wouldn’t feel sorry for her.” With that in mind he went with a navy Adidas tracksuit (below) and a black Adidas short suit (above, very top). He even paired the black look with a knee-high socks. “If you’re going to go for the shorts then you have to have the tall socks,” Perez says. “It was so wrong it was right.”

To get her groove back, Tamra enlists her cousin, played by the fabulous Laverne Cox. While they do successfully get her out of the tracksuits, it’s not quite the Mindy look we’re used to seeing. When this doesn’t go over so well with Danny, she suits back up, but thankfully by the end of the episode Dr. Castellano is able to get her back to feeling her best self.

For the final scene, Perez dressed her in a Missoni knit dress (below). “The whole point of the episode was for Mindy to stop fighting and embrace herself, so we wanted this dress to be something that was in her closet that she realized she could still wear,” Perez explains. The knit dress hugged her curves so well—look out for it in next week's finale.
