Mindy Kaling Proves That She's a Pattern Mixing Master on This Week's The Mindy Project
Our favorite on-screen couple Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) and Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) ran into a relationship snafu in the bedroom on this week’s episode of The Mindy Project, and as you can imagine, hilarity ensued. In between our giggles, we couldn’t help take notice of the bold, patterned looks Mindy donned throughout the episode—especially the masterfully mixed outfit she wears above.
For the scene, costume designer Salvador Perez dressed Mindy in a houndstooth Theory jacket, a paisley Equipment blouse, and a plaid skirt from Alice + Olivia, which he finished off with brightly colored BaubleBar earrings and Karen Millen pumps. “It was a quintessential Mindy outfit,” he tells InStyle. “Even though there were all these patterns it worked so well, and since the other outfits in the episode are pajamas and a hospital gown, I wanted the outfit to make a statement.”
However, that wasn’t the only outfit that caught our eye. We found ourselves obsessing over her gorgeous Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress, too (below). “[Mindy] as a general rule does not like wrap dresses, but this wasn’t a typical wrap dress,” says Perez. “It was patterned in the front and the back and then had sheer sleeves, [plus] give me a chain pattern, and I’m always going to be happy!”
I never wear wrap dresses on #themindyproject even though I saw and loved Journey Of A Dress. Then @salvadorperezcostumes put me in this gorgeous @DVF one that looks so vintage and chic with a drapey chain and now I'm obsessed.

While no BaubleBar earrings, accessorized the Diane von Furstenberg look, we couldn’t finish our weekly recap with the costume designer without discussing his just-launched collection for the brand. “I’m glad that its out to the public and it’s been well received!” he tells us. “As a costume designer, I’m always looking for bold jewelry, and you don’t find a lot of statement jewels out there. I’m excited to put something out there that didn’t normally exist.”
The collection, which is now available to shop on BaubleBar.com, includes earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, all with Perez’s signature pizzazz. “Accessories that are colorful make a great statement,” he continues. “It’s a great way to add interest whether you’re in a cocktail dress or jeans and a t-shirt.” Agreed!
We’ll be chatting with Perez every week about our favorite looks from The Mindy Project, so be sure to check back in next week!
