It's not every day you get to see your favorite celebrities sharing their (slightly awkward) prom photos, but on Tuesday, many of them began sharing pictures from the high school rite of passage, all for a good cause.

Michelle Obama kickstarted the prom photo challenge with a throwback picture of herself posing with her date in the early '80s, wearing a pink satin polka-dotted dress with a matching jacket.

"Throwing it back to my 1982 prom night and this pink satin, polka-dotted dress," she wrote, encouraging students and teachers to join the Prom Challenge in partnership with MTV and non-profit organization When We All Vote to help register students to vote.

Soon enough, others began joining in with their prom photos to spread the word — including Tracee Ellis Ross, who shared a photo of herself getting ready for her prom in 1990 at age 18, wearing a Giorgio Armani dress (and some impressive bangles).

Kerry Washington also posted a glam shot from one of her prom nights, proving that her cheekbones have always been strong.

House and CSI: NY actress Sela Ward also joined in with a very mod photo from her prom, writing, "I remember what a big deal my senior prom was...and so was voting in my first election!"
