Princess Diana Once Wore a Lace Slip Dress with a Choker to the Met Gala
Whether it's on your radar or not, the Met Gala 2018 is right around the corner, and the lucky celebs who were invited are busy preparing. Rihanna and Amal Clooney are gearing up to host the evening's festivities as gala chairs. Kim Kardashian told fans on her app Thursday that she's in the middle of a pre-Met Gala cleanse in anticipation of the night.
And while our eyes will be glued to the carpet to watch how each of them interprets this year's theme (the controversial "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination"), they'll all have to settle for falling in the footsteps of an earlier Met Gala icon: Princess Diana.
Yes, a royal attended the Met Gala way back when, and unsurprisingly, she brought her style A-game.
More than 20 years ago at the 1996 Met Gala, Diana wore a dark navy Dior slip dress with lace trim that only accentuated the dress's spaghetti-strap design. The lingerie-inspired look was from John Galliano's first couture Dior collection, but Diana made it her own by pairing it with a chunky pearl and sapphire choker.
As fashionistas know well, Met Gala events are themed. The year Diana attended was a tribute to Christian Dior, so her look was extremely fitting.
Maybe this year will bring Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle to the Met Gala carpet?
Perhaps not, with the new royal baby and wedding keeping them busy, but we'd take any of the practically royal stars who have yet to attend too—because seriously, how has Meryl Streep not gone yet?
