Buckingham Palace is Re-Examining Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's New Post-Royal Exit Titles

Buckingham Palace is working on revising its guidelines on the way Meghan Markle and Prince Harry should be addressed following their stepping down from their royal roles.

The change is being addressed after concerns arose with the way it sounded as though the Duchess of Sussex was in fact divorced following their new title revision. This spring, the pair will no longer be known as His and Her Royal Highness, but instead as Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

But, as many have pointed out, the same change previously applied to Sarah Ferguson, who is now referred to as Sarah, Duchess of York. Previously, Sarah divorced Prince Andrew in 1996, and began using the new title. The same happened with Harry's mother, Princess Diana, after she divorced Prince Charles and began going by Diana, Princess of Wales.

Previously, Meghan was dubbed Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex following her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018. Harry has been known as His Royal Highness, the Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, and Baron Kilkeel.

The palace has stated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles won't be changing, but the way the names are formatted is up for debate.

The Palace is working alongside the Garter King of Arms, who typically works within issues that pertain to titles and royal protocol. When a solution is reached, new guidance will be passed on. It isn't clear what the updated titles for Meghan and Harry will be just yet, but we'll be keeping an eye out for the change.
