There’s a lot in the news about Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s alleged “feud,” and I’ll admit, more than a few articles on the matter have been penned by yours truly — but in a sea of conflicting reports, what is actually true? And though we’ll probably never really know, there’s no shortage of internet fodder to analyze.

Much to our confusion, Us Weekly reported that Meghan and Kate “aired their grievances with one another” on Christmas Day, with Middleton sharing that she felt as though Harry’s bride had “used her to climb the royal ladder.” Um, what? As Glamour pointed out, marrying a Prince is a pretty surefire way to “climb the royal ladder” — what sort of leg-up could Kate possibly provide that Meghan doesn’t already have?

Elle hit back at the insinuation with comments from a source of their own. “The stories of the two duchesses having a major ongoing feud are just overblown," the outlet’s source explained. "[Meghan and Kate] have enormous respect for each other and are both devoted to representing Her Majesty in the humanitarian and charitable work they do." “Respect” isn’t exactly code for braiding each other’s hair at Princess Camp, but it’s a palatable explanation.

The upshot of it all? No matter which story you choose to believe, they all seem to end the same way: with Meghan and Kate in a good, amicable place (and a very happy Queen to boot). If the first four days are any indication, 2019 is the year of totally chill royal in-laws.
